2009 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. This makes the grand cherokee a fine choice for families who venture off-road or vacation in the mountains or other remote areas.  its edgy and angular lines make it instantly recognizable as a jeep. Inside, the atmosphere is light, comfortable, and enveloping, with lots of seat adjustments, and excellent outward vision around relatively slim windshield posts.  with nearly 70 cubic feet of cargo space, the grand cherokee is useful for hauling whatever a family may need.  a wide range of engines is available. The 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is updated for 2009, increasing from 330 to 357 horsepower. The hemi is particularly good for towing or driving at higher elevations. The high-performance srt8 model has a 420-horsepower 6. 1-liter hemi v8 and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. The diesel engine makes it frugal for an suv of its size.  grand cherokee was last redesigned for the 2005 model year. Hill-start assist holds the brakes on a hill to allow smooth launches. Air conditioning is standard, along with cloth upholstery, cruise control, power windows, power heated mirrors, power locks with remote keyless entry, eight-way power driver's seat with lumbar adjustment, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, am/fm/cd audio with auxiliary input jack, sirius satellite radio, driver information center, 60/40 split folding rear seat, engine immobilizer, water-resistant storage compartment, roof rack and p245/65r17 tires with alloy wheels. Quadra-drive ii full-time active 4wd is optional 795) with either engine. Quadra-drive ii adds low-range gearing, hill ascent and descent control, a special axle ratio, and front, center, and rear limited-slip differentials. It also comes with skid plates and front tow hooks. The laredo can be ordered with the 4. 7-liter v8 930). If this engine is chosen with awd, the price is $1730 and it also comes with quadra-trac ii, which includes low-range gearing. The limited also comes with jeep's uconnect gps and uconnect phone. Uconnect gps includes a navigation system with voice recognition and real-time traffic, a 6. 5-inch touch-screen, an ipod adapter and a 30-gigabyte hard drive to hold music and picture files, as well as navigation map information. Uconnect phone provides a wireless cell phone link. Limited 4wd 39,010) gets all that plus hill start assist, hill descent control, and quadra-trac ii with low-range gearing. Quadra-drive ii is an option.  the 4. 7-liter v8 is optional for both 2wd 930) and 4wd 1580) limiteds. The 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is optional 1750) for both 2wd and 4wd limiteds, and the 3. 0-liter turbo-diesel v6 is optional for both 2wd 2760) and 4wd 3560) models. Other options consist of a rear dvd entertainment system with sirius backseat tv 1720), chrome 18-inch wheels 995), class ii and iv trailer hitches 280-$430), and high-intensity discharge headlamps with auto leveling 500). Sirius backseat tv includes three child-oriented channels: cartoon network, disney channel and nickelodeon.  grand cherokee overland 41,110) comes with the 5. 7-liter hemi v8, and adds a wood-and-leather steering wheel, real wood accents on the doors and console, two-tone leather and ultra-suede seats embroidered with the overland logo, a leather-covered console and armrest, the high-intensity discharge headlamps with auto leveling, a class iv trailer hitch, and chromed 18-inch aluminum wheels with p245/50r18 tires. Platinum accents highlight the exterior. Overland 4wd 44,545) adds quadra-drive ii. The 3. 0-liter diesel engine is optional for 2wd and 4wd overland models 1010).  grand cherokee srt8 42,665) comes with a 6. 1-liter hemi rated at 420 horsepower, a lowered suspension, performance brakes, its own electronic all-wheel-drive system, and p244/45r20 front and p285/40r20 rear run-flat tires. Distinctive bumper fascias and 20-inch wheels make srt8 instantly identifiable. Also standard are auto-dimming rearview and exterior mirrors and automatic headlights. Also available are rear obstacle detection, a rear backup camera, hill descent control, hill start assist, and trailer sway control. walkaroundlast redesigned for 2005, the grand cherokee looks square-edged but modern, with a fashionably high waistline and small side windows. The shape of the body is designed to protect the sides of the vehicle from potential road debris.  while conventional suvs, such as the dodge durango, are built on a separate frame like a truck, the grand cherokee uses an unusual construction scheme jeep calls uniframe, a close marriage of a welded steel unit-body and underlying front and rear frame modules. This is an extremely sturdy and rigid concept developed back in jeep's days with unit-body pioneer american motors. The grand cherokee has earned a five-star safety rating in both front and side impact tests from the federal government.  limited models present a flashier appearance than laredos, with a chromed grille, bright inserts in the bumpers, and accent-color bodyside molding.  the overland is distinguished by mesh-texture grille inserts between its traditional vertical grille bars, which are platinum in finish; platinum accents also appear on the bumpers, side moldings, roof-rack side rails, liftgate light bar, and mirrors. The wheels are chromed, and the front sill guards are brushed stainless.  jeep reached deep into its heritage for the overland name. First built in 1903, the overland automobile was the earliest ancestor of the willys. Willys played an instrumental role in the development and production of the world war ii-era jeep, but was also the first automaker to seriously envision a civilian market for a military-style utility vehicle. The willys jeep debuted in 1946 and had its name shortened to just-plain jeep in the early 1960s. Although the jeep brand has passed through several owners since then, its lineage remains unbroken.  the srt8 has a monochrome look all its own, relieved by bright trim at the belt level and bodyside and accented by enormous five-spoke, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels. Functional air ducts in its more buff front bumper fascia improve brake cooling. Srt8 is available only in bright silver, brilliant black or inferno red. interiorthe seats are large and cushy (in all trim levels except srt8). In laredo models, they are upholstered in cloth with leather as a package option, while limited seats are two-tone leather with perforated inserts. In overland, the seats are upholstered in saddle-perforated high-contrast two-tone ultrasuede, featuring accent piping and embroidered overland logos. Overland also features real wood trim on the steering wheel, instrument panel, door panels, and gear selector.

2010 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A terrific compact suv. introductionthe ford escape looks like a little truck among small suvs. Its styling reminds us of ford's larger, truck-based sport utility vehicles. The escape's ride height and seating position are a bit higher than competitors such as the honda cr-v, and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is substantially more than most other vehicles in the class.  yet the ford escape still delivers the advantages of unit-body, car-based competitors such as the honda cr-v. All variants, including the v6 and escape hybrid, deliver some of the best epa mileage ratings in the class. All models are offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.  for the most part, the hybrid drives just like a conventional gas-only escape. It's a well-executed package. Folding the rear seats opens a good sized cargo area with a flat floor, and space behind the seat surpasses that in the trunk of a typical sedan. There are lots of interior storage spaces, the finish is upscale and pleasing, and feature function and switches are among the best.  escape was redesigned for 2008. For 2010, changes are minor. An integrated blind spot mirror, mykey programmable vehicle key, rear view camera system, and active park assist are now available, and the escape also features hands-free sync with traffic, directions & information. All the features improve safety and reduce driver distractions.  the ford escape remains one of the more appealing vehicles in its class, regardless of price, and certainly one of the better values. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic 1,210) is optional. The xls comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and locks, an am/fm stereo with cd and auxiliary jack, rear window defroster and 16-inch steel wheels.  options for the xls include remote start 345), sync 395), side step bars 345), and a security system 250).  the escape xlt 23,540) and xlt 4wd 25,290) add more standard features, including upgraded cloth upholstery, a power driver's seat, cruise control, privacy glass and 16-inch alloy wheels. A 240-hp, dual overhead cam 3. 0-liter v6 1,000) is optional on the xlt, and includes the six-speed automatic.  options for the xlt include a variety of packages, with the most comprehensive, package 204a 2,230), including a cargo cover, roof rack, wet towel bin, sync, a moonroof, leather, and ambient lighting. There is also premium sound with seven speakers 395), a dual-headrest dvd entertainment system 1,995), sport appearance package 895), 17-inch alloy wheels 695), and towing 345).  the escape limited 25,270) and limited 4wd 27,020) come standard with the v6 and automatic, plus leather seating, a six-cd changer and automatic headlights.  options for the limited include package 302a 2,250), consisting of the moonroof, premium audio system, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, reverse-sensing system, rear-view camera, and universal garage-door opener; and navigation with the premium sound 1,995).  the escape hybrid is available in two trim levels, the base version 29,750) and the base with 4wd 31,500); and the hybrid limited 32,260) and hybrid limited 4wd 34,010). The hybrid limited versions are equipped similarly to the limited models, but add the hybrid powertrain. Unlike some mild hybrid suvs, the escape hybrid can run on 100 percent electric power up to about 25 mph.  safety features include front- and side-impact airbags for front occupants and curtain-type head protection airbags for all outboard seats. The side curtains can remain inflated for several seconds in the event of a rollover, and are designed to slide between the side glass and occupants if the people are oddly seated or resting heads against a window. For starters, the escape sits a bit higher than many competitors, and the high profile is enhanced by its design.  the grille looks like it was designed for a truck. The headlights are essentially connected to the grille, and shaped to create a family resemblance with ford's edge crossover suv. Yet the grille itself is tall and flat and stacked right on top of a skid plate-type fascia that flows under the bumper. The escape's beltline, or the crease that runs just under the windows, is high, too, and its roof pillars are blacked out. The taillights have a clear band that wraps around the rear corners. The lower bumpers and rocker panels are now painted to match the body on all models, rather than molded in a matte finish. In total, the effect is cleaner and more polished than previous models, and it's all quite handsome.  the side mirrors are large, but their shape generates little noise as air speeds over them. The roof, too, is designed to reduce interior noise. Recessed channels running its length are intended to move air more quietly over the surface. Horizontal ribs underneath the panel add structure, which limits flex in the metal and reduces booming noise inside at high speeds.  we're fond of a couple of features in back of the escape. A new step pad on the bumper provides secure footing for anyone who steps up to put something on the roof rack, and the two-piece tailgate is handy. The rear glass can be popped open with the key fob, so dropping small items like a gym bag into the cargo area is much easier than it might be with some competitors, which require hefting the entire gate upward. interiorthis is one of ford's best interiors in terms of the look and feel of materials used. It looked like the lacquered finish on a fine piano. The satiny black or silver used in lower trim levels isn't bad, either. Yet the highlight is a woven-look, rubberized trim on the dash and console. It looks sporty and suited to a more expensive car.  the escape features upholstery cloth made from 100-percent recycled material. Overall, though, the seats are smaller than those in a larger sport utility. Drivers with big frames might find them small. There's not an abundance of side bolstering, but that makes it easier to slide into the seats, and there's enough to keep occupants solidly in place during the type of driving a typical escape owner is likely to undertake.  the gauges are clustered in a shaded binnacle that can be absorbed in a glance: tachometer left, speedometer right, with fuel and coolant temperature in the middle, along with an easy-to-read trip- and systems-info display. We absolutely loved this, because it includes a menu that allows the driver to easily cycle through and change features such as headlight-off delay and auto-locking.  the gauges and switches feature ford's new signature backlighting style, which the company calls ice blue. No gripe here, as the bluish white is crisper and brighter than conventional green-yellow or orange lighting. The problem is the script on the gauges, and particularly the speedometer. The big vents at the ends move lots of air, and there are two more in the middle near the top of the center stack. These can be aimed to avoid blasting the driver’s hands or face with a rush of air. At the very top sits a neat display that shows compass heading, date and time, exterior temperature and, on models so equipped, the two interior temp settings.  when it comes to placement and function of switches, the escape is first rate, and examples are easy to find. When the driver rests his or her left for.

1999 jeep wrangler review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The king of off-road vehicles. introductionthis is the undisputed king of all-road vehicles, but living with a jeep wrangler is much easier than it used to be.  the wrangler was completely redesigned and re-engineered for 1997 and the result was a vast improvement over its predecessors in every respect. Now it's quieter, roomier and more comfortable. It's more capable off road. And it's affordable.  during the past two years, there have been refinements to further improve it. Yet the wrangler remains true to its gritty heritage dating back to world war ii when jeeps served with distinction around the globe. That remains true in spite of the fact that nearly every body panel was redesigned two years ago for a softer, gentler appearance.  the open fenders, flip-down windshield, big grille, plastic side curtains and exposed hinges and fasteners are still, giving the wrangler that rugged, no-nonsense look that has appealed to us for more than 50 years.  jeep's wrangler is available in three models. At first glance, the base se looks attractive, but its low price quickly rises when carpeting, nicer seat fabric, a rear seat, a stereo and other options are added. Not having a rear seat is certainly an option for those who don't think they'll ever use it. The se comes with a 4-cylinder engine that is best teamed with the standard 5-speed gearbox.  sport and sahara models come with the much more powerful 4. 0-liter 6-cylinder engine.  the wrangler sport we tested is a good choice for those who want more power and a higher level of standard equipment. Three different tire sizes are available, including huge 30x9. 5x15 goodyears designed for desert conditions. For all around use, especially snow and slush and rain, skinnier tires are a better bet. We think the best compromise are the optional p225/75r15 goodyear wranglers.  new colors for 1999 are forest green and desert sand. New interior colors include camel and agate; sahara versions are available in a new combination of camel and dark green. Soft and hard tops are available in a new dark tan.  one of the biggest decisions when buying a wrangler is selecting the top. Purists prefer the soft top, a high-quality piece of equipment that can be configured according to the weather. The side curtains, however, can be a hassle in everyday use. Stopping at a toll booth in the rain can mean a lap full of water when the side curtain is unzipped.  we prefer the $755 optional hard top because of its practicality. The hard top provides more security for expensive gear; i was uncomfortable leaving sage fly rods and expensive reels protected only by fabric and clear plastic. It comes with full-height doors and wind-up windows. Driving one at dawn through a violent thunderstorm felt dry and secure. Rearward visibility is aided by the rear-window defroster, wiper and washer. Wind noise is greatly reduced. Either top is far easier to remove or install than tops of years past and provides much better sealing from the elements. interiorif elegance can be defined in terms of neatness and simplicity, then the wrangler comes with an elegant interior. The modular instrument panel and heating and ventilation system are huge improvements over the last-generation wrangler-the one with the square headlights. For 1999, rotary heating, ventilation and air conditioning knobs offer an improvement over last year's slider controls, especially when wearing gloves.  high-back front seats are comfortable and offer good lateral support. For those who own outdoor dogs or drive through deep mud, the interior can be cleaned with a garden hose. For weekend excursions, the best plan is to leave the back-seat passengers behind, flip the rear seat forward--or remove it--and head for the hills. There's enough space behind the rear seat for a fly rod, a vest and a pair of waders. Flip the rear seat down and there's plenty of room for a tent, a cooler, camping gear and even more fishing equipment. It doesn't get much better than that.  need to haul still more stuff? Spring runoff had carved deep gullies in the muddy trail as we slogged past buckhorn canyon toward fort misery. A car simply would not have made it up the muddy, rutted hill climbs. That's the essence of the newest generation wrangler. It provides the ultimate in off-road capability without punishing its occupants on the long road back to civilization. It's the right choice for perilous off-road treks like california's rubicon trail. But it's also fun for cruising around the neighborhood. Paved roads seem much smoother. Corners are handled with more dignity. It feels stable at 80 mph. And wet pavement is not to be feared. At the same time, the wrangler's off-road capability is superior to that of even the legendary jeep cj. It's an impressive balancing act.  wrangler's engineers achieved this balance by replacing jeep's 50-year-old leaf-spring suspension with a coil-spring suspension. They mounted it onto a rigid new chassis that provides a stable platform for the suspension to do its job. Coil springs provide better handling on and off road and enormous suspension travel. Wrangler's quadra-coil suspension boasts an additional seven inches of articulation over the old leaf spring suspension.  greater approach and departure angles mean the wrangler can cross trenches and clamber over rocks and fallen trees that would trap the old jeep. Few vehicles can match the wrangler's rock-climbing ability. At the same time, it does not feel like a utility truck when winding down a curvy road.  still, the wrangler is no sports car. Its handling is competent, but the basic design is essentially truck, with a high center of gravity. Hurrying this or any sport-utility vehicle around tight corners is not a good plan. summarywith its stiff chassis, compliant suspension, smooth, strong engines, and comfortable interior, the jeep wrangler is an enjoyable companion on the highway and around town. And it just can't be beat off road. assembled intoledo, ohio. options as testedair conditioning, am/fm/cassette stereo, full console with cup holders, large fuel tank, aluminum wheels, heavy-duty shocks, dana 44 rear axle, locking differential, fog lights, side steps, leather-wrapped steering wheel, tow hooks. model testedsport. 2012 nissan sentra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Roomy and quick. introductionthe nissan sentra compact is bigger inside than it looks outside. Inside is a roomy interior. The spacious cabin is finished like that of a more expensive car and it has comfortable and supportive seats. There's a 60/40-split rear seat that folds flat, opening up the trunk space and creating a large flat cargo area that's handy for hauling long items.  the sentra is fun to drive, with a level of performance and handling that's a pleasant surprise in a compact sedan. The se-r spec v has a turbocharged version of the 2. 5-liter engine boosted to 200 hp and fitted with a 6-speed manual. Sentra se-r models also feature suspension modifications for sharper handling. Even though they offer higher levels of power and handling, we found them easy to live with. Se-r spec v is rated 21/28 mpg.  the 2012 sentra is unchanged. The current-generation sentra was launched as a 2007 model and benefited from a moderate facelift for 2010.  the nissan sentra represents a solid value. It's roomy inside, the engine is modern and competitive, and the chassis provides good handling and a comfortable ride. We like the continuously variable transmission. The cvt version also sports an se-r style rear spoiler.  sentra 2. 0 s 17,990) adds a height adjustment for the driver's seat, power exterior mirrors, remote keyless entry, cruise control, illuminated steering wheel audio controls, a six-speaker sound system with rds and mp3 capability plus ipod interface, vehicle information display, upgraded security system, and p205/55hr16 tires. A convenience package 850) for the 2. 0 s includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel, bluetooth wireless cell phone link, intelligent key keyless entry and ignition with remote trunk release, and a cargo net and hooks. New for 2012 is the technology package 650), which adds touch-screen navigation, xm satellite radio with navtraffic (subscription sold separately), and a usb port.  sentra 2. 0 sr 17,990) is equipped identically to the 2. 0 s, but has a sportier appearance borrowed from the performance-oriented se-r, with a mesh grille, unique front and rear fascia treatments, side sill spoilers, smoked headlights and taillights, driving lights, exhaust tip, sr badging on the rear deck, and aluminum alloy wheels. Options include touch-screen navigation 400), leather seats with front-seat heaters 900), and a new special value package 990) that combines the moonroof, navigation, xm navtraffic, rearview monitor, dual illuminated vanity mirrors, and a cargo net and hooks. Optional on the se-r is the se-r upgrade package 2,450) with moonroof, dual visor vanity mirrors, xm satellite radio, rearview monitor, intelligent key with keyless ignition, and the 340-watt rockford fosgate audio system with navigation.  sentra se-r spec v 20,620) comes with the 2. 5-liter engine tuned to produce 200 hp and 180 pound-feet of torque, and a six-speed manual gearbox. The se-r spec v has a lowered performance suspension, larger disc brakes, some structural reinforcement (which deletes the folding rear seat), and w-rated p225/45r17 tires. Optional is a spec v upgrade package 2,600), which is identical to the se-r upgrade package except that it also includes a helical limited-slip differential.  accessories available on all models include floor mats 120), auto-dimming inside mirror 130), splash guards 150), and interior accent lighting 240).  safety equipment includes dual-stage front airbags, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, active front-seat headrests, and a tire-pressure monitor. Antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), vehicle dynamic control (vdc), and traction control are standard on all models as well. walkaroundthe nissan sentra is larger than the subcompact versa and smaller than the midsize altima. From every angle, it looks like the latest-generation nissans. With its crisp character lines, the sentra resembles a scaled down altima. We like the new front end; it manages to look both cleaner and richer and more upscale, all at once. The previous look was sort of angular, with the fog lamps in sharp-edged openings and what seemed like a lot of cuts and creases, but the new front end is smoother. The grille opening looks like that of a more expensive car, and the integration of the grille, lower air intake, headlamps and fog lamps is much cleaner and less busy.  the new look also works well with the short overhangs, which give the sentra a sporty, assertive appearance.  along the sides, only widened bodywork around the wheels breaks up the clean, attractive doors and quarter panels. A character line rises from the front door back to a tall trunk, giving the sentra a bit of a rake. For example, the locking glovebox is deep enough to hold a laptop computer. There is also an available integrated removable cd holder on the headliner above the driver's sun visor. The front of the center console has a tray for items such as cell phones, as well as two cupholders that are adjustable for 20-ounce bottles or 32-ounce mega cups. Pockets with see-through netting are provided on the backs of the front seats for passengers' cell phones and ipods.  the sentra's interior volume measures 97. 4 cubic feet, more than many of its competitors. The trunk measures 13. 1 cubic feet (12. 0 cubic feet for the se-r spec v). To increase cargo space, the 60/40 split rear seat can be folded flat, to open up the space into the trunk (due to a structural bulkhead, the se-r spec v lacks the folding seat). There's no problem fitting a bicycle or maybe two back there, through the trunk; two friendly people could even sleep back there.  we've spent time with a bare-bones sentra 2. 0 with cloth seats, a fully equipped 2. 0 sl with leather, and a se-r spec v with its sport seats. The se-r's sport seats are better bolstered and have a grippy fabric to keep the driver in place during enthusiastic cornering.
