Bulging front fenders wrap over the front wheels and incorporate the headlamps within their forward sweep. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells.  the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lamps on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares.  built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup truck gets a unique rear suspension and a frame section that is 245 percent stiffer. Compared to the former generation silverado, the frame is 234 percent stiffer torsionally, 62 percent more resistant to bending and 136 percent stiffer laterally. All of this allows such things as reducing the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. The center stack puts ventilation and audio controls within easy site and reach of the front seat passenger. This version has a single glove box in the dash.  for 2008, all silverado models get brighter gauge needles for easier viewing in daylight, xm satellite radio with three months of complimentary service, and a power adjustable driver's seat is available for the 40/20/40 bench on regular cabs.  extended cabs feature stadium-style seating with an elevated view for those sitting in the second row. Both the extended cab and crew cab versions offer plenty of rear legroom. The rear seat bottoms can be easily be folded up to provide more room on the floor for cargo. The ltz cabin is available in three interior colors and, though it will show dirt faster, the lightest color gives the most luxurious impression.  on the other hand, the wt/lt version is more conventional truck with a more open floor area, space for junk all over, and no concerns that something might get scr. Larger v6 brings more power to the lineup. introductionthe chevrolet equinox has pricing and features of a compact suv, but it's slightly larger than its direct competition, closer in size to a midsize and it has features not expected in its price class.  front-wheel drive is standard, optional all-wheel drive adds winter weather capability. The 2013 equinox with the 2. 4-liter engine and front-wheel drive gets an epa-estimated 22/32 mpg city/highway; the 2013 equinox awd is rated at 20/29 mpg.  for 2013, a 3. 6-liter v6 replaces the previous 3. 0-liter v6, adding 14 percent more horsepower and 22 percent more torque while delivering virtually equivalent fuel economy. The numbers are 301 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque. The 2013 equinox with 3. 6-liter v6 is epa-rated at 17/24 mpg city/highway. With all-wheel drive, the 2013 equinox awd is rated 16/23 mpg. Regular gasoline is recommended for all equinox models; more-expensive premium is not needed. We found the more powerful v6 makes upgrading to the bigger engine worthwhile.  the 6-speed automatic transmission is updated, also, which benefits all 2013 equinox models with a smoother driving experience than before.  the current model is the second-generation equinox, which was launched as a 2010 model. 2013 equinox models come with some new features, including an eight-way adjustable front passenger seat and a universal garage door opener. The equinox is not sporty, but its handling is on par with that of the honda cr-v and toyota rav4.  interior roominess is one of its major strengths. Equinox has plenty of room for up to five passengers and their cargo. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and they have 10 inches of travel, so drivers of all sizes will fit. Equinox uses the same theta architecture that underpins the gmc terrain.  up front, equinox features chevrolet's signature two-tier dual-port grille with gold bowtie insignia. The headlights wrap around the front fenders. Air ducts sit below the headlights and house fog lights in chromed bezels that bisect the openings. The lower front fascia is charcoal-colored plastic and it has an air dam in the center. The hood has three character lines.  around the sides, the equinox has pronounced fender flares and a wheels-at-the-corners stance, especially up front. The roof features wraparound side glass at the rear and available tinted rear and rear side windows. All but the equinox ls model have luggage side rails. Seventeen-inch aluminum wheels are standard and 18- and 19-inch wheels are available.  at the rear, the equinox has dual round taillights, a takeoff of the malibu design, and a roof spoiler. The tailgate opens upward, and a power, programmable tailgate is offered. Owners can program the tailgate to open to different heights so shorter drivers can reach it. Overall, the look is attractive and fairly aerodynamically efficient, with a 0. 36 coefficient of drag. The ltz's additional chrome trim adds a touch of class, especially with the chromed 19-inch wheels (though they are ridiculously priced at $3,600). interiorchevrolet says the equinox interior was inspired by the interior of the last generation malibu midsize sedan. While that may be true when it comes to aesthetics, it's not true in terms of execution. The malibu has since been redesigned and the interior materials have improved significantly. Instead, like the toyota rav4 and honda cr-v that chevrolet benchmarked when developing this vehicle, the equinox has hard plastic on the entirety of the dashboard, as well as on the center console and door panels. The ice blue ambient lighting is a delightful feature. Equinox ls models have it on the center stack surround and in the center console cupholders. Equinox lt models add it on the instrument panel and center console, and the equinox ltz gets it in the door handle recesses, in the footwells, and in the door map pockets. The first two apps are stitcher and pandora internet radio. The system's home screen features icons that are easy to understand, though drivers may have to stretch to reach the screen, which is also heavily hooded and leans away from the driver. The radio, navigation system, bluetooth phone, and mp3 players are run through the mylink. The speedometer and tachometer feature white numbers and black backgrounds. They are set in large pods and in between are water temperature and fuel gauges, as well as a digital trip computer readout. The base interior has a storage cubby at the top of the center stack. When the mylink system is ordered, it sits in this spot. The center stack is trimmed in a good-looking clear-coated silver-painted plastic. The controls here are grouped in a tight bunch, with the radio buttons up top and the climate controls at the bottom. This mass of buttons, dials and knobs can be confusing.  space is not a problem in the equinox. Cloth or leather, the front seats are comfortable and supportive. Gm obviously spent some money here. They are especially attractive in leat.

It can be equipped with a standard bed (6-foot, 6-inch) or a long bed (8-foot), two bucket seats or a three-person bench seat, v6 or v8.  the extended cab has two rows of seats with rear-hinged rear access doors that open 170 degrees and have roll-down windows. The extended cab can be equipped with either a short bed (5-foot, 8-inch), standard or long bed. The gmc emblem is set amid dark horizontal bars in the middle of an upright and chrome-surrounded grille. The headlamps are a pair of stacked, jeweled lenses. So other sierra models use a pure pickup interior with more function, like dual glove boxes, and less luxury.  the 'pure pickup,' as it's called, has a unique dashboard that is more driver-oriented and has larger switchgear and door handles that are designed to be easily manipulated by those wearing work gloves. The pure pickup interior includes a 40/20/40 split front bench seat with the center section folding down to provide a large storage compartment and wide armrest.  the suv-style luxury-oriented interior puts audio and ventilation system controls more easily within reach of the front-seat passenger and has two front bucket seats with a fixed center console with assorted storage compartments.  either dashboard sports full analog instrumentation, and many have more info available through digital display. Operating controls are gm simple, especially on the pure pickup, while the top-line models central dash has many small white-on-black buttons that may require a short learning curve. Some drivers report peculiar ergonomic details as the steering wheel is slightly offset from the seat centerline.  rear seating is provided for three people in the extended and crew cab versions, with 34. 3 inches of rear legroom in the extended cab and 38. 7 in the crew cab, space is similar to ford's f-150 and nissan's titan, and smaller than dodge's quad and mega cabs and tundra's double and crewmax cabs. The crew cab rear seat is split 60/40 and can folded up individually for a flat load floor; this arrangement is optional on extended cabs.  access to the rear seating area of the extended cab is eased by rear-hinged doors that open to nearly flush with the bed sides. Sitting in the back seat of the extended cab is made more pleasant thanks to the fact that the windows in the rear access doors power fully down. driving impressionwe've driven multiple versions of the new gmc sierra and found all of them to be comfortable.  the 5. 3-liter v8 provided plenty of power for the extended cab sle models we drove and the 6. 0-liter v8 was more than enough for the slt crew cab we checked out. All engines need to be revved up (by truck standards) for best grunt. Generally the sierra models match competitors for smoothness, though by benefit of their five-speed automatics the ram 4. 7 typically runs with gm's 5. 3, the ram 5. 7 and titan 5. 6 compete with the gm 6. 0, while tundra's 5. 7 and six-speed auto performance can be matched only by the denali's 6. 2 and six-speed auto.  of the suspensions, the z83 is claimed the smoothest ride while the z85 is slightly stiffer and for those who often tow.

The grille is flanked by stacked headlamps sporting the latest reflector-optics. The front bumper incorporates rectangular fog lamps.  the hood has a wide power dome. Bulging front fenders wrap over the front wheels and incorporate the headlamps within their forward sweep. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells.  the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lamps on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares.  built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup truck gets a unique rear frame section that is 245 percent stiffer. Overall, compared to the former gmt800 truck, the frame is 234 percent stiffer torsionally, 62 percent more resistant to bending and 136 percent stiffer laterally. All of this allows such things as reducing the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. It also enhances aerodynamics and fuel efficiency and allows suspension components to provide improved ride and handling characteristics.  the front suspension has switched from torsion bars to coil-over shock absorbers and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member frame to provide enhanced control and feedback. The truck also has a new rear axle design with shocks absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control. interiorthe silverado wt and lt come with what chevy calls the pure pickup truck interior while the ltz features a more luxurious interior.  the pure pickup interior is more driver oriented, includes two glove boxes in the dashboard, one of them just about the right size to hold a pair of work gloves and a few small items, and a 40/20/40-split front bench seat with the center section of the seat back folding down to form a wide arm rest with lots of storage capacity. This interior also features larger switchgear controls and interior door handles designed to be easily manipulated even while wearing bulky work gloves.  the more luxury-oriented interior includes bucket seats with a permanent center console with 20 liters of storage capacity. The center stack also puts ventilation and audio controls within easy site and reach of the front seat passenger. This version has a single glove box in the dash.  extended cabs feature stadium-style seating with an elevated view for those sitting in the second row. Both the extended cab and crew cab versions offer plenty of rear legroom. The rear seat bottoms can be easily be folded up to provide more room on the floor for cargo. Rear seats are split 60/40 so one side can be folded up for cargo while the other is used for seating.  chevy says the interior of the new sierra is 20 percent quieter than its predecessor, thanks to enhanced insulation materials, much like those used in the company's sport utility vehicles, and to aerodynamic improvements that reduce wind noise. driving impressionwe've driven two versions of the all-new 2007 chevy silverado on paved and gravel roads in the desert west and north of phoenix. Later we got into the more upscale version of the lt with an extended cab and standard bed, same v8 engine and same z85 suspension. 2012 volkswagen beetle review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It does this in a big way, with a clean-sheet redesign that makes it new again. It's the new beetle, not a new beetle.  the 2012 volkswagen beetle jumps like a bug on a skillet from its heritage. It's 7. 3 inches longer, 0. 5 inches lower, and 3. 3 inches wider than the 2010 new beetle, last one made. The stretch morphs it into a real car, not so much a cute little thing. It looks good with more dynamic proportions. It's still unmistakably vw beetle.  the coefficient of drag, 0. 37, is surprisingly good, although not near the lower (by 2 inches) honda civic, at 0. 315, or the smaller ford fiesta at 0. 33. Interior volume has grown by 5 percent, from 81 to 85 cubic feet. The roof is lower, but because it's also longer, there's a bit more rear headroom. In the front, it gains 1. 9 inches in legroom and 2. 5 inches in shoulder room, making the 2012 beetle feel less like a capsule.  the front legroom is 0. 7 inches more than that in the all-new 2012 toyota yaris, but the beetle's rear seat has just 31. 4 inches of legroom, which is 1. 9 inches less than the yaris, on a wheelbase that's 1. 1 inches longer.  the trunk of the 2012 beetle is spacious at 15. 4 cubic feet. With the rear seat folded it's nearly 30 cubic feet, and the high-swinging hatchback enables giant things to fit inside, making the beetle handy for hauling.  the seats and trim are neat but not fancy. The bucket seats are clean, simple, and comfortable, with excellent bolstering.  instrumentation is so clean it's memorable for its rarity. In the center of the big clear speedometer there's a multi-function digital display, accessed with a flick of the driver's right thumb, scrolling a small wheel on the steering wheel. It makes for safe driving!  the 2. 5-liter inline five-cylinder engine, with an iron block and double overhead cams, is carried over from the new beetle, but the horsepower increases by 20, to 170 hp. Torque increases by seven foot-pounds, to 177 foot-pounds at 4250 rpm. It's mated to a standard 5-speed manual gearbox, or optional 6-speed automatic transmission that didn't wow us. We've driven a vw golf with that 5-speed manual transmission, which is satisfying and gives the car pep from 0 to 60. We recommend the manual.  acceleration in the 2. 5l is adequate, and 75 mph on the freeway is smooth and mostly effortless. The 6-speed manual automatic transmission isn't as much fun as the manual, especially with this engine. The automatic's side-to-side semi-manual shifting using the lever at the floor was better than nothing, but not very racy.  a 2. 0-liter turbo model is also available that comes with a 6-speed manual transmission and a different rear suspension. The turbocharged engine makes 207 horsepower and 217 pound-feet of torque at a low 1700 rpm, and it gets about the same fuel mileage although on high-test gas. It's a 2. 0-liter turbodiesel with direct injection, making 236 pound-feet of torque. The engine has been used successfully for some time in the golf and jetta tdi.  the chassis is rigid and the body solid, with subframes front and rear, supporting the suspension. The rear uses a torsion beam, although the beetle turbo uses a more sophisticated multi-link, for the higher threshold of cornering. The freeway ride in the beetle doesn't suffer for the torsion beam. It's comfortable and consistent. Potholes don't hurt, but rough pavement can make the rear end of the car want to dance. lineupthere is a stripped-down beetle 18,995), but good luck finding one. It uses the 170-horsepower 2. 5-liter inline 5-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission. It comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, front and rear disc brakes, power windows, cruise control, leather steering wheel, cloth seats, 50/50 split folding rear seat, trip computer, and 8-speaker sound system.  the 2012 beetle 2. 5l 19,795) adds body-colored mirrors, v-tex leatherette seating, 6-way manual seats with lumbar, heated front seats, a second glovebox, bluetooth and mdi (media device interface). A 6-speed automatic transmission is available 20,895). Options include heated front seats, three-color interior ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels, and fender audio system.  the beetle is available as a panoramic sunroof model with added features such as keyless entry and touch-screen radio. It's available with manual 22,295) or automatic 23,395). The 6-speed dsg dual-clutch automatic-manual transmission 24,495) is available. The beetle turbo comes standard with bluetooth, ipod connectivity, three-color ambient lighting, larger brakes with red calipers, second glovebox, sport seating surfaces, 18-inch alloy wheels, rear spoiler, foglights, three additional gauges, and alloy pedals. It makes 140 horsepower with a fat 236 pound-feet of torque, using either the 6-speed manual or 6-speed dsg. That's how the silhouette of the beetle changes, by making it 7. 3 inches longer, 3. 3 inches wider, and 0. 5 inches lower. The new shape is more dynamic and muscular; gone is the cuteness, although not the identity. Its coefficient of drag is 0. 37, a good number that still lags behind some competitors, and reveals the legacy of a round bug. The sleek 2012 honda civic, for example, comes in at 0. 315.  looking head-on at the new beetle, it's wide and chubby enough that the lines are actually horizontal. A narrow black mouth under the bumper spans the face like a pinched grin, under perky headlamps like eyes, and a hood seam that seems to define a wide nose, having one chrome nostril with vw in it.  at profile, the good-looking roofline is like a stylish tight arc, with roadster lines tracing to a 2005 concept car called the ragster, that had the look of a chopped-top hot rod.  the wheel cutouts are perfect semi-circles dropping down toward the pavement. In contrast to the smooth curves of sheetmetal everywhere else, the fender flares have squared edges, offering contrasting definition to the shape.  the beetle might be called a hatchback. The rear gate is massive. No compromises to the car's shape, for the utility of cargo loading. It's like the old bug, in a welcome way.  there's a decent amount of room inside the 2012 beetle, 85 cubic feet. Rear headroom, and front legroom and shoulder room is more than that in the new beetle, so it doesn't feel so much like a capsule. But it's not so roomy in the rear, with just 31. 4 inches of legroom, which is 1. 9 inches less than in the yaris, despite the beetle being nearly 14 inches longer. However, that excess length is mostly overhang; the beetle wheelbase is only 1. 1 inches longer than the yaris.  the 2012 beetle trunk has grown to a spacious 15. 4 cubic feet, a whopping increase of 27 percent over the new beetle; and with the 60/40 rear seat folded, there's a vast 29. 9 cubic feet behind the front seats. The rear trunk lid is like a hatchback or wide liftgate, so giant things can fit inside. With the dear old vw bug, there would have been no way, for even one of them.  there's good visibility out the front and rear, even with the low roof and high beltline. And it's a quiet ride. For example the extra glovebox, called the kaeferfach or beetle bin. For sure the simplicity of the instrument pan. Brilliant engineering and attention to detail. introductionlonger than a suburban, the chevy avalanche combines the passenger-pampering comfort of a tahoe with the load-hauling capability of a long-bed silverado pickup. The key to its versatility is its clever midgate, which is like having a second tailgate between the cabin and the pickup box. Normally, the avalanche can carry five adults in comfort and a large amount of cargo in a covered, 5-foot 3-inch indestructible bed. The 2004 avalanche gets an enhanced brake system.  one thing that hasn't changed, however, is the attention to detail seen throughout the avalanche. The people who designed this truck were into fishing, hunting and boating; they knew the needs of outdoor enthusiasts, and they have provided for those needs with flush-mounted cargo lights that illuminate the bed, foldaway tie-down hooks, and footholds and handholds for climbing onto the bed. The 2500 now comes in 4wd only 37,350).  avalanche 1500 models are powered by a 5. 3-liter vortec v8 producing 295 horsepower and 330 pounds-feet of torque. A few of the amenities that aren't standard are included in the driver convenience package 540), which adds dual-zone automatic climate control; power adjustable pedals; a homelink universal transmitter; steering-wheel-mounted controls for the audio system; and an expanded driver information center. Even more extensive options groups are available, and include a premium bose stereo with rear-seat controls and headphone jacks; heated side mirrors with a curb-tilt feature, ground illumination and turn signals. Other entertainment options include a rear-seat video entertainment system 1295-$1485) and xm satellite radio 325). Onstar 695-$820) and a power tilt-and-slide sunroof 995-$1290) are available as stand-alone options.  stabilitrak electronic stability control 750) is available on premium package 2wd models. Avalanche 1500 4wd can be ordered with chevrolet's z71 off-road package 1955), which combines 265/70r17 on/off-road tires, a high-capacity air cleaner, skid plates, and off-road suspension with a long list of luxury extras.  avalanche 2500 4wd is powered by the vortec 8100, an 8. 1-liter v8 rated 320 horsepower and 445 pounds-feet of torque. It comes mated to a 4l85-e heavy-duty automatic transmission, also with overdrive and tow/haul mode. In place of the 1500 model's five-link rear suspension with coil springs and automatic load leveling, the 2500 rides on two-stage, heavy-duty leaf springs. Towing capacity is boosted to 11,900 pounds, with a payload rating of 1807 pounds.  relative to the 1500, the 2500 does not add any luxury equipment or interior appointments, but it does come with its own heavy-duty carpeting and rubberized floor mats, a larger (37. 5-gallon) fuel tank, a transmission temperature gauge, transmission oil cooler, and skid shields. Wheels are forged rather than cast, and tires are higher-profile 245/75r16s, rather than the 1500's 265/70r16s. walkaroundthe most interesting feature on the avalanche is the midgate, which converts this five-passenger sut with 5-foot bed into a two-passenger pickup truck with an 8-foot box. The midgate works similarly to a folding rear seat in a wagon or suv. Flipping the seat bottoms forward and folding the seat backs down, and then folding down the midgate, provides flat cargo space and access to the cargo bay behind. The bed cover comes off in three pieces and slides into a nice fabric bag; these pieces attach to the side of the bed to minimize the space they take up. But wind noise is minimal, with no buffeting. One thing that surprises many people is the size of the avalanche. It doesn't look that big in photos, but it's big, almost three inches longer than a suburban. Yet the avalanche feels tight and surprisingly nimble on mountain roads.  the avalanche is essentially a modified suburban; they share about 85 percent of their parts. Like the suburban, the avalanche is built on the same superb platform as the silverado pickup. Gm's engineers created the avalanche by lopping off the rear roof structure and quarter windows of a suburban, and redesigning the back end. When the avalanche's rear seats are in place, there's a 5-foot 3-inch bed, which is long enough for most tasks. When that's not enough it converts into an 8-foot bed by taking over the rear seats.  the bed is protected by a well-designed lockable cover rated to support 250 pounds. The midgate, tailgate and portions of the cargo box are made from a composite material called pro-tec. This material is exceptionally durable, and resists dings, scratches and dents. Two top-box storage compartments on either side of the cargo box provide a combined 3. 5 cubic feet of lockable storage space. These compartments have drains, so they can be filled with ice and used as coolers.  the avalanche led the way for chevy's edgy new truck styling, which was picked up by the silverado for 2003. Still unique to the avalanche is its extensive lower body cladding, made of a dark charcoal-colored, practically bullet-proof composite that should protect the rocker panels from years of flying gravel. Still, some folks didn't like the hyper-testosteroid look of the cladding, so it can be deleted (on 1500 models) for a $600 credit. The avalanche looks cleaner, if a bit plainer, without it. We recently glanced at a clean, black avalanche without the cladding and for a moment mistook it for a cadillac escalade ext, the upscale sibling. interiormost of the interior features of a well-trimmed suburban are found in the avalanche. That means a comfortable cabin for passengers and good ergonomic design for the driver. The seats in the avalanche are identical to the first two rows in the suburban. The avalanche comes with a coffee warmer, and the ultimate in sun visors. Map lights are provided and there is generous illumination throughout the cabin. Flush-mounted cargo lights in the bed rate can make a big difference when loading cargo at night.  multi-zone manual climate control is standard on all models. So are dual-level air bags with an automatic passenger-sensing system. It comes with two sets of wireless headphones, auxiliary audio/video jacks, a remote game plug-in, separate audio controls for the rear compartment, and a mute button.  onstar works well as a navigation system because there's nothing to program.
